Timeless and soulfull.

Like many photographers, I love black and white photography. It has a timeless quality and often gets to the soul of the subject, far more so for some reason than colour photography. I admire those photographers who shoot in black and white only. I wish that I could be that disciplined. Maybe it’s not too late!

North Burma, February 2015. As part of a three week trip to Burma, we visited a small monastery on the outskirts of Amarapura. There we came across a group of 12 novice nuns singing in one of the classrooms early one morning. We were invited to listen to the singing and of course readily accepted. As we entered our guide instructed us to sit on the floor with our legs pointing behind us. It wasn’t the most comfortable shooting position for sure but it was a sign of showing respect according to local custom. Photographs allowed, we were told. So with a long telephoto lens and the shutter on silent, I looked through the viewfinder to see a wonderful pair of eyes looking at the camera. I took the shot. It was the only photograph I took of the novice nuns, as I knew when I looked at the back of the camera that I had captured something unique.
