Different.
I’ve always enjoyed travelling. Different countries, different cultures, different experiences; for me it’s what life is about, outside family and friends of course. During my travels over the last 5 years, I have been fortunate enough to visit many countries in Europe, Asia and the Americas and photograph many different aspects of life, from how the Chinese Fishermen in Kerala live to the city lights of Boston. Included in this collection are some of the photographs that I’ve taken on my travels.
Kerala Backwaters, India, November 2018. Somewhere between Cochin and the backwaters on the western shores of Lake Vembanad, lies a small cluster of Chinese Fishing nets. They can be seen from afar but thick jungle prevents closer inspection. We were fortunate enough to end our 3 week trip to India at Purity in the backwaters, and so one evening we ventured along the path adjacent to the property to see if I could get closer to the nets. Dogs started barking as we approached some houses and huts built into the forest and as we walked further we were approached by some friendly faces. We laughed and joked with them for a while and said that we were trying to get close to the shoreline to photograph the nets. They gestured to a hut in the distance and so we walked on. Again we were welcomed onto the property and I spoke with the fisherman who owned the nets. He showed us around his grounds and said that I could return for sunrise the following morning at a little before 6.00 am. I asked if he could raise one of his nets and he agreed to do that also. The following morning, I duly arrived at his hut at 5.30 am and we walked to the shoreline together, but the best vantage point was located in his neighbour’s property and could only be reached by walking on a tall boundary wall. And so he helped carry my gear and tripod as we both balanced along the wall together, and then he left me to enjoy the tranquility of dawn over the backwaters, and take a long exposure photograph of his fishing nets, and yes he had remembered to raise one of the nets. An experience I will never forget. As a small thank you, we bought his family a meal that evening.
