The drama of it all.

For me, landscape photography is all about drama; travelling to remote locations offering spectacular viewpoints and waiting for the right weather conditions to allow for dramatic photographs. It’s exciting, unpredictable and often challenging, but that’s the appeal. But I’ve come to learn that it requires careful planning, a lot of hiking and a willingness to accept failure.
As Ansel Adams famously once said, ‘Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer, and often the supreme disappointment.’ If I can shoot one good photograph a month, I am delighted. And whilst I don’t always succeed, I do enjoy the drama of it all.

Longdranger on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Iceland, July 2019. I have been to Iceland several times over the last 5 years. It never disappoints. After arriving at my hotel in Hellnar on the south side of the peninsula on day 3 of my trip, I drove out to the Londranger Cliffs that evening to recce the location. After a short trek from a nearby car park, some of the most dramatic coastline I have ever seen anywhere in the world slowly revealed itself. It was absolutely breathtaking! So the following morning, I made a very early start and drove back to the cliffs for sunrise. Upon arrival at the place I’d found the previous evening, I climbed out on a thin line of rocks as it offered the best vantage point looking to the west over the cliffs. I set up my tripod and camera somewhat precariously. With waves swirling below, seagulls hugging the rock faces and winds gusting, it was spectacular if not a little scary given I was the only one there and I wobbled a few times! But as the sun rose slowly behind me it bathed the rock face in a soft warm light, and I managed to capture one of my favourite landscape photographs from Iceland. Drama at its best!
